Description:

Provide Red Cross relief to local families who are experiencing a disaster! The most common disaster the American Red Cross responds to every year is a single family house fire, although a variety of disasters can affect people in your community every day! The American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana needs volunteers to serve as Single Family Disaster Caseworkers.

Key Responsibilities Include:

• Meet with families that are experiencing a disaster
• Interview clients, fill out appropriate paperwork, and work with your teammates to determine and address the emergency needs of the clients
• Assist families with utilizing available American Red Cross resources (food, clothing, shelter)
• Provide any necessary follow-up assistance to families
• Be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a designated period of time
• Be knowledgeable about the American Red Cross and the services it provides

As a Single Family Disaster Caseworker, you will be helping families in your community when they need help the most!

Time Commitment: Caseworkers must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to meet the needs of families that have experienced a disaster. Flexibility is a necessity!

Length of Commitment: At least 6 months; prefer a year or more. Once trained, you may remain active as required training is updated.

Your time is not only valuable to the American Red Cross, but also to your community members in their time of emergency who need someone to help them find shelter and recover from the disaster. By committing to be a Single Family Disaster Caseworker, you will be providing an important community service that has a direct and visible impact on the lives of local families!

Skills:

• Ability to respect and uphold the confidentiality of your clients
• Ability to implement assigned activities within a limited time and in a variety of situations
• Flexibility and ability to work well under stress and in adverse conditions
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to promote, develop, and maintain productive working relationships with a broad range of individuals, groups, and units
• Ability to complete assigned tasks in consultation with supervisor
• Ability to be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a specified period of time
• Must provide own transportation to site of disaster and other community sites
• No previous experience necessary, but training is required and provided.

Training:

• Orientation to American Red Cross
• Introduction to Disaster Services
• Client Casework
• On-the-job and additional training as required by the American Red Cross
