Boat People SOS Legal Intern: Human Trafficking/Domestic Violence

Boat People SOS, Inc. (BPSOS) seeks a legal intern to support the Staff Attorney. The Staff Attorney represents human trafficking survivors in their immigration applications, family law issues and or domestic violence.

TIME COMMITMENT: June – Late August

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist the Staff Attorney in preparation of immigration applications (primarily T Visa and asylum) for human trafficking survivors.
2. Assist the staff attorney in drafting motion and pleading.
3. Perform research of human rights, country conditions, mental health and other reports to support client applications;
4. Complete research on deadline;
5. Research and collect general human trafficking monographs and research-based reports that could support applications;
6. Record all completed volunteers hours

GOALS:

1. Successful, timely completion of research and client applications;
2. Updated a library of human trafficking monographs and research-based reports;
3. Intern learns about human trafficking and preparation of human trafficking immigration applications

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Current pursuit of a law degree’
2. Commitment to ten hours per week for one law school semester;
3. Fluency in Spanish required;
4. Demonstrated research skills;
5. Flexibility to perform research outside of the office and meet periodically with the Staff Attorney;
6. Sincere interest in human trafficking and human rights;
7. Excellent organizational, computer, verbal and writing skills;
8. Ability to take intitiative and work under pressure with limited supervision;
9. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact professionally with BPSOS staff.
