Description:
Thailand Programs: Temple Teaching at Wat Nuen Pananao
T2T is able to offer our volunteers the opportunity to practice meditation in a Thai Buddhist Temple. Volunteers can stay at a temple just outside of Nongkhai, receiving lessons in meditation and Buddhism whilst teaching English at a nearby school.
The Wat is a forest temple, meaning it has no immediate congregation and is set up to be peaceful and tranquil. The temple houses only monks, and only men are allowed to stay in the temple meaning that unfortunately we are unable to accept female volunteers on this program. Stays in the temple also have to be continuous and for the duration of the stay the volunteer cannot leave the temple.
Whilst staying in the Wat volunteers are expected to respect the strict rules and conditions of the temple. Whilst these rules are not as strict as those for the monks and nuns and they can come as a shock to unprepared volunteers. Those who would like volunteer in the forest Wat must understand that this is not an easy task for everyone and be prepared to adapt.
The program can be combined with other volunteer programs and we would highly recommend that if combining a stay in the temple with other volunteer programs in Thailand you stay at the other program first to give you a chance to adapt to Thai culture and lifestyle before moving onto the Wat.
Food
While in the Wat volunteers share food with the monks and nuns and can join the monks collecting alms in the morning.
Weather
The cold season is between December and February. The season from March till May is the hot season. June till November is the wet season raining a bit most days. In the wintertime, December-February, it can get quite cold (occasionally under 10 C) at night. There are no hot showers in the Wat.
Accommodation
Volunteers live in small houses in the temple grounds. The houses have a main room with a bed and fridge and a seperate bathroom and shower. Conditions are the same as those for the monks though and so very basic.
Introduction
Since the Wat is in Nongkhai volunteers will arrive and receive introductions in Nongkhai, staying in our Nongkhai volunteers dorms during their first weekend.
Activities
