Description:

Majority of the girls that come to Street Girls Aid primarily speak “Twi” and other indigenous Ghanaian languages. Many of them cannot spell their own names because they have had no formal education. These girls are not enrolled in schools because their parents are initially unable to afford school fees, school uniforms and textbooks. Sadly enough, some of these parents feel that their daughters’ time will be better spent on the streets making money than in schools.

Noticing this, the Street Girls Aid organises two groups of literacy classes to educate these unfortunate girls in English language. They have literacy classes for girls aged 8 to 11 years and literacy classes for girls aged 12 to 17 years. As a volunteer literacy class teacher, you will be required to teach any of these age groups basic English grammar, reading, spelling as well as arithmetic. You will also be required to build self-esteem in these girls and help them fit into any skill training they may choose in the future.

Aside these, your duties will also include:

- comparing syllabi available and designing lessons in English grammar and arithmetic to suit the ages of girls you teach;
- keeping records of progress made in your literacy classes;
- making learning fun and easier for these girls;
- encouraging these girls to take up reading habits by setting up reading clubs or enforcing structures already in place at the Street Girls Aid;
- etc

Please notify Linking Cultures on which age group you will like to teach when you apply.
