INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: East Somerville Main Streets, a neighborhood economic development organization, seeks a part time intern (approx. 10hs/week) to assist with the planning and coordination of events throughout 2009 - with a focus on coordination of our fall fundraiser. This individual should have some background in event planning and should be interested in developing indepth skills in event coordination and planning. About our Fall Fundraiser: East Somerville Main Streets will host a large scale fundraiser in the fall of 2009. We are looking for a part time intern who is interested in assisting in the planning and implementation of the fundraiser from start to finish. This individual should be energetic, creative, and ambitious.

The intern will work with staff, board of directors and volunteers in planning this event. Interns are encouraged to use the internship as an opportunity to learn about non-profit management and coordination.

ORGANIZATION: East Somerville Main Streets is part of a nationwide movement of nearly 1400 Main Street Organizations working to build thriving local economies and centers of community. These districts develop local pride and identity, often at a contrast with an increasingly homogenous national landscape. The Main Street Approach advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts based on their unique assets: distinctive architecture, a pedestrian-friendly environment, personal service, local ownership, and a sense of community (for more info. see www.mainstreet.org).

East Somerville is Somerville’s most diverse neighborhood, with a 30+% immigrant population, and nearly 60% of the establishments in the commercial district, immigrant-owned. Immigrant residents and store owners are predominantly from El Salvador and Brazil. The neighborhood is also the City’s most economically repressed and in need of resources to develop and maintain its unique characteristic.

INTERN CHARACTERISTICS: As Main Streets programs run on a small staff, a high-attention to detail, self-motivation, and adaptability are essential. An ability to work with many types of people, strong writing skills and creativity are also important.
Fluency or background in Spanish and/or Portuguese preferred, but not required.
