POSITION SUMMARY

The Americorps NPRC position is a full time commitment to disaster preparedness and response. Members serve alongside paid and volunteer staff and are guided by the goals of the National Preparedness & Response Corps to provide direct service to clients of the American Red Cross. These goals focus on supporting the community in response to disasters large and small and helping advance preparedness efforts to prevent and mitigate emergencies. Due to the nature of the program shifts vary to meet the needs of the New York community. Members receive a living stipend of $15000 for the program year and are eligible for an education award upon successful completion of the program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Chapter Responsibilities

• Support all aspects of Disaster Services for your county, including chapter disaster response, planning and preparedness, logistics, client services, staffing, training, recruitment and emergency communications.
• Deploy or work locally on National Disaster Relief Operations as a member of DSHR (Disaster Service Human Resources). Deployment could occur at anytime to any location with in the U.S. Deployment engagements last a minimum of 3 weeks.
• Lead Community Disaster Education presentations within the Chapter’s jurisdictional area with a goal of increasing awareness and knowledge of disasters and other emergencies.
• Complete projects within Disaster Services which will enhance service delivery.
• Respond to recurring and non-recurrent disasters in your county and throughout the Greater New York Chapter.
• Become a Red Cross authorized driver. Driving Red Cross emergency vehicles to recurring and non-recurrent disasters


NPRC Responsibilities

• Acts as part of a team to complete NPRC goals and objectives.
• Coordinates in collaboration with others a special project relating to the accomplishment of NPRC goals and objectives.
• Participates in member development activities of the NPRC Corps.
• Completes NPRC Member Hour/Activity report.
• Performs other duties as requested by site staff related to the principal duties and responsibilities of the National Preparedness & Response Corps program.


REQUIREMENTS

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

• Previous experience and success working with diverse populations
• At least one year of volunteer or community service experience
• Additional experience to be determined by site

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Excellent organizational skills
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
• Public speaking and group facilitation
• Ability to mobilize on disaster assignments lasting a maximum of three weeks
• Demonstrate professionalism and initiative.
• Team-oriented
• Flexibility

Other:

• A current valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
• At least 18 years of age at the start of the program
• Willing to be on call and work long hours
• A U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or lawful permanent resident alien of the U.S.
• Willing to make a 10.5 month commitment starting no later August 14, 2006 and complete 1700 hours of service.
