Description:

AHAC (Alternative Healthcare Access Campaign) has been providing free acupuncture, massage and naturopathic clinical services to homeless and low-income individuals in Seattle since October of 2000. Over 4000 treatments have been provided to 1500 patients, 47% of whom have returned for further treatment. We currently offer these clinical services at 6 sites in the King County area, incuding Tent City, Compass Cascade Women's Center, Angeline's Day Center for Homeless Women, Frye Apartments, Roots Young Adult Center, and Peace on the streets by kids from the streets.

We are looking for volunteers who are concerned about the issue of access to alternative medicine-especially for low-income and homeless populations. These volunteers should not be alternative medicine practitioners (see our Alternative Medicine Practitioner Opportunity). However, many of our current non-practitioner volunteers are alternative medicine students. Volunteers need not have prior experience in the medical field.

The site coordinator is responsible for making sure one particular site runs efficiently. She or he communicates with all the volunteers at the site, the program contact for the site, and specifically acts as a liaison between the site and the steering committee. They are empowered to make decisions regarding the weekly functioning of each site, discussing major changes or difficulties with the steering committee as necessary.

Initial responsibilities include:

* Initiate contact with site volunteers, volunteer practitioners & site contact.
* Arrange for an on-site orientation.
* Attend a patient tracking training.
* Check that all forms being used are up to date & stocked.
* Check charts to make sure all required forms are present & all charts are well organized.

Monthly responsibilities include:

* Check in monthly with all on-site volunteers & the site contact.
* Set up the volunteer schedule for the next month.
* Assure that any necessary forms are copied and that any needed supplies are delivered to the site (can be done by site coordinator or volunteer).
* Report the information collected – schedule, site needs (including additional volunteers), special events on site and/or incidents – to the Steering Committee
* If possible, volunteer on-site at least once per month.
