Description:
St. Catherine’s School and Orphanage is church based school which caters for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in the heart of Kibera. The institution has an orphanage which caters for eight children aged between 7-13 years. The institution also offers education from kindergarten to class 5, to currently 105 children within the kibera slum. The children come from extremely poor families, single parents and those orphaned by Aids related illnesses.
The institution was started by a pastor of a Christian Hope Network church who is also the director of the center.
Currently there is acute shortage of teachers due to lack of funding with the whole school having only five teachers on volunteer basis, who are given allowances and no salary. The volunteer teachers, together with the Pastor’s wife also take care of the orphans who are hosted within the center.
Location
The center is located in the heart of Kibera, one of the largest slums in Africa. The slum is characterized by very high poverty, HIV/Aids prevalence and many other economic challenges. The center is only 8 kilometers from downtown Nairobi and accessible by the local transport which is very convenient.
