Description:
What began as the "Daytona Beach Community Fund" in 1941 has grown into today's United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties, raising funds for partner agencies. There is no
other charity like United Way. We combine over 50 fund-raisers into one, saving the community-and our agencies-time and money that is better spent helping people. We
constantly bring local volunteers and community leaders together to identify and solve local problems.
United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties is closely associated with numerous organizations that connect with low-and-moderate income individuals in our community. The
individuals being served by these agencies are the target population for the Campaign for Working Families. The Campaign for Working Families (CFWF) is a prosperity coalition that
serves Volusia and Flagler Counties in Florida. The coalition primary goal is to reduce poverty by giving people the tools to help them build assets and become financially secure -
giving people the tools to succeed -- changing the way people live. We accomplish this by providing free tax preparation, financial literacy classes and a savings campaign. Over
the last four years the Campaign has provided over 6,100 people with free tax preparation and provided over 100 people with financial education classes.
This VISTA position supports the goals of the coalition by helping to develop strong working relationships with the five local universities (Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach College, Embry Riddle University, Stetson University, and University of Central Florida,
Daytona) and developing service learning and volunteer opportunities for local students. Students and university workers will be provided financial education and tax services, and then students will be recruited, mentored and trained to deliver financial education and tax
preparation services to much needed low income families in the Volusia and Flagler communities.
The FASS AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative is a service program that aims to empower students through volunteerism and service-learning to create positive change in our communities. VISTA members earn benefits, including a living allowance, health insurance, student loan forbearance, and a $4,725 education award to apply toward tuition, student loans, or future graduate studies. Applicants from out of state are eligible for a relocation allowance.
