Description:

Florida Southern College began a formal approach to service learning with the assistance of Florida Campus Compact in the 2006-07 academic year. During the 2007-08 academic year, service learning courses were formally integrated throughout a variety of disciplines. Sixty percent of Flroida Southern College undergraduates volunteer in the community, logging 10,000 hours of community service annually through the Center for Community Service. Florida Southern College has a great desire to prepare our graduates to develop a sense of community." The VISTA project will actively engage students in a variety of service learning opportunities. Students will acquire knowledge and values that foster positive contributions to society through excellent educational preparation. The VISTAS project will help create opportunities for students, faculty and staff to participate in mutually beneficial community partnerships.

he VISTA member will identify service learning opportunities for students in the community. Develop partnerships with civic, educational, social service and religious organizations that currently serve disadvantaged communities in Central Florida. Develop and implement a system for tracking service learning and community service activities. Develop an infrastructure that will support and sustain the Center for Service Learning and the Center for Community Service at FSC. Work with the FSC grant writer and faculty to develop external resources (cash and in-kind) to support and insure continued school involvement in service learning. Coordinate training and outreach activities associated with the partnerships.

The FASS AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative is a service program that aims to empower students through volunteerism and service-learning to create positive change in our communities. VISTA members earn benefits, including a living allowance, health insurance, housing, student loan forbearance, and a $4,725 education award to apply toward tuition, student loans, or future graduate studies. Applicants from out of state are eligible for a relocation allowance.
