Description:
The member will set up a data base for the program to use and update well beyond the life of this project. The goal is to set up a pool of mentors throughout the Northern Region of Alaska that includes the Fairbanks area and many outlying villages The member will make contacts with the assistance of various community partners and enter data to record all contacts whether they are successful or not. This will also apply for seeking potential employers for youth exiting the program. The member will be closely supervised and supported by the project supervisor. The member will have a work station not in the secured area of the facility. The VISTA member will also work with various community partners to utilize their expertise in developing contacts and ongoing programming needs to make this project successful.
The Fairbanks Youth Facility Treatment Unit is a 17 bed institutional treatment program for delinquent male youth between the ages of 13 to 19. The mission of the Division of Juvenile Justice is to hold juvenile offenders accountable for their behavior, promote safety and restoration of victims and communities, and assist offenders and their families in developing skills to prevent crimes. The VISTA member will be serving institutionalized male youth and their families. The male youth in the program are institutionalized by the court for treatment. Aftercare is a crucial part in their re-integration if they are going to be successful.The VISTA member will also assist with male and female youth who are on probation

AmeriCorps*VISTA helps communities implement grassroots solutions designed to alleviate poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, the program places individuals at nonprofit organizations and public agencies across America. Among other activities, AmeriCorps*VISTA members, who serve full time for a year, recruit community volunteers, raise funds, help manage projects, and otherwise build the capacity of non-profit organizations to become sustainable.
VISTAs serve for a variety of reasons, from wanting to make the world a better place to discovering a life-changing adventure. For one year, you will be doing everything you can to create and expand programs that ultimately bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
As a VISTA, you’ll gain:
* Memorable experiences
* Highly developed skills
* New friends
* A sense of belonging to a community
* Feeling of waking up every morning to help the world
* A new challenge
Recent graduates gain the kind of real-world experience they can’t find in a typical entry-level job. Experienced adults apply their skills and knowledge to serious social problems and discover previously untapped strengths.
In return for a year of full-time service, you’ll also receive other benefits as well:
* $4,725 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or $1,200 post-service stipend
* Living allowance
* Healthcare benefits while in service
* Childcare assistance while in service
* Student loan forbearance or deferment while in service
* One year of noncompetitive status for a federal government job
* Access to the network of VISTA & VISTA alumni
