Description:

The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public.

Currently, Internet Archive is offering an exciting opportunity for several volunteers to take part in the digital preservation of books! We have special collection books from the 16th to 20th centuries that need to be scanned and uploaded onto www.archive.org to allow further access to the material. Come join us while we digitize library books and contribute to Internet Archive’s goal to provide universal access to human knowledge.

Position Summary:
We are seeking volunteers who can operate a Scribe scanning machine that takes digital photos of books from many generous libraries and universities in the region, and puts them online for universal access. In-house training will be provided.

Have a chance to gain experience in the following fields of endeavor: building an open
source digital library, digital photography, matters of copyright and public domain, non-profit work, digital scanning software, and preservation, presentation and production of digital books.

You will be volunteering at a pleasant, low-stress work environment located at the Princeton Scanning Center in the Speer Library at the Princeton Theological Center.

Special Requirements:
We are looking for people who are patient, conscientious, and detail-oriented to work on this unique project. Basic knowledge of computers, digital files, and digital cameras is helpful. The volunteers must be independent, able to sit for 1-2 hour periods and comfortable with repetitive motion. A love of and appreciation for books is a plus, especially when handling special collection books.

Commitment: Assistance is needed Monday through Friday from 7 am to
3 pm. Position involves a minimum commitment of three hours per week, as well as a minimum commitment length of one month.

For those interested in bolstering their credentials and getting more involved, we offer an eight week internship that has a minimum commitment of four hours one day a week.

Volunteer positions are available immediately.

**Both the volunteer and internship positions are unpaid**
**This volunteer opportunity is not associated with the Princeton Theological Seminary**
