Description:

Dakota City Heritage Village seeks volunteers to help with spring and summer youth programs. Located on the Dakota County Fairgrounds in Farmington, Dakota City is a rural agricultural village and museum that brings history to life. Dakota City offers many volunteer opportunities. Volunteering at Dakota City is a great way to meet new people, teach children and visitors about Dakota County’s rural history, and have fun!

Volunteers are needed to guide tours, lead school programs in the one-room school, and demonstrate various 1900-era chores. Dakota City will provide all of the necessary training and everyone is welcome. The time commitment is flexible, as you sign up for opportunities at times when you are available.

Dakota City offers three school programs during the spring and fall. The One-Room School program, for students 2nd through 5th grade, teaches students in a 1900-era school and takes them on a Village tour. Teachers and guides are needed for the four-hour program, which is divided into two parts. The Hands-On-History program gets students in kindergarten through 2nd grade “up close and personal with history.” They visit stations to collect eggs, barter in the General Store, do laundry, and perform other chores. Tour guides are needed as well as volunteers to demonstrate laundry, help find eggs, and work as the storekeeper. This program lasts an hour and a half. Guides are also needed for the third program, “Village Experience,” a two-hour tour that includes several interactive stations throughout the village.

Dakota City offers two summer programs from June to August. The first, Summer in the Village, is geared toward daycare and YMCA groups. Tour guides lead various activities during this two-hour program. The four-day Summer Youth Camp, called “1900 Apprentice,” will be offered one week in June and two weeks in July. Youth ages 6 to 14 will participate in activities, led by volunteer demonstrators, that depict everyday village life from a century ago.
