Description:

VIN immediately requires a HEALTH CARE volunteer to work at a Buddhist monastery in Kathmandu. VIN works for many monasteries in Nepal and you will also have opportunity to visit various monasteries and learn about Buddhist while providing them health care support. There are over 110 monks in every monastery.
You will have an amazing opportunity to learn Buddhist culture while working with them. You will stay at the same monastery and share the same food with them

You job description includes:
- Create administrative system to assure monks are invited for required check-ups (medical secretary)
- Regular check-ups: history, physical examination, development (mental, physical ), vision and hearing examination
- Supply Shenell vision chart, scale, coloured vision chart, growth charts, metre
- Teach monks examination
- Check up all monks in the next two weeks

IMMUNISATION
- Introduce VACCINATION CALENDAR and assure all required vaccines are given (including boosters)
- Create administrative system to assure monks are invited for required vaccinations (medical secretary); introduce vaccination cards/passports (a card for each monk, where vaccinations will be written down – name of vaccine and date of application)
- Find out which vaccines has each monk been given and plan 'emergency' vaccination to assure all monks are up to date with the vaccination calendar

HYGIENE
PERSONAL HYGIENE
SHOWERING
- Arrange water for monks` shower room
- Plan rotation for showers, ideally minimum x2/week
- Train welfare manager/supervisor
- Teach monks about the importance of washing and how to wash
- Supervise washing to assure it being done properly
- Regular checks that monks are clean (welfare supervisor's responsibility)
- Rotation for daily showers and toilets cleaning
TEETH BRUSHING
- Teach monks about dental anatomy, physiology and pathology
- Teach monks about dental hygiene and how to brush correctly
- Supervise brushing
- Regular (morning & evening) checks (welfare supervisor's responsibility)

- CLOTHES WASHING
- Assure each monks has got at least two sets of robes
- Plan rota for clothes washing
- Make sure that monks always wear a clean set of robes after they have showered
- Use assigned monk numbers to distinguish each monk's belongings

SHAVING
- Assure each monk uses his own razor blade
- Supply towels, razors, toothbrushes, toothpastes, soaps
- Set up a system for regular checks and replacements of razors, brushes etc.
- Train welfare manager/supervisor; he will be responsible for all aspects of personal hygiene, clothes washing and room cleanliness. Ideally two or thee monks
Other roles:
- Write rota for showers on a weekly basis
- Supervise showering
- Daily checks of room cleanliness (in the morning or in the evening)
- Check monks as well as their clothes are clean and they have brushed their teeth –
- twice a day, after breakfast and after dinner (before bed time)
- Write rota for laundry, make laundry arrangements

FOOD HYGIENE
TRAIN KITCHEN STAFF
- Personal hygiene such as hand washing
- Food hygiene (storing, working with, cleanliness of kitchen and any other areas that food and water get in contact with
- Importance of using clean drinking water

Working in the KITCHEN
- clean and spacious working surfaces
- clean storage space for food and dishes
- supply clean drinking water; boiling/refillable bottled water/
• WATER HYGIENE
NUTRITION
- Using clean drinking water
- Assure balanced diet suitable for children/teenagers – protein (beans, lentils, dairy products, meat), sugars (rice, bread), fats, minerals and vitamins (fresh fruit and vegetables)
- Teach kitchen staff about dietary requirement and possibly train a monk-dietitian

TRAIN A MONK-DOCTOR AND TWO MONK-NURSES on:
examination, preventative medicine
vaccinations, nursing, basic pathology
including rational antibiotic therapy
infections and their management
