The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public.
We are looking for enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteers to help us in the digital preservation of books and long playing records. Enjoy our collections of rare and eclectic books and records while you help archive them for future generations to enjoy as well. Join in Internet Archive’s goal of providing universal access to all human knowledge.
Position Summary:
Volunteers will operate a Scribe scanning machine that takes digital photos of books. They will also manage turntables, a flatbed scanner, and Audacity software to preserve donated records. In-house training will be provided on both the Scribe and the LP digitization center, but some previous technical knowledge is a big plus.
You will be volunteering at a pleasant, low-stress work environment located at First and Mission.
Have a chance to gain experience in the following fields of endeavor: building an open
source digital library, digital photography, matters of copyright and public domain, non-profit work, digital scanning and recording software, and preservation, presentation, and production of digital books.
Special Requirements:
We are looking for people who are patient, conscientious, and detail-oriented to work on this unique project. Basic knowledge of computers, digital files, turntables, and digital cameras is helpful. The volunteers must be independent, able to sit for 1-2 hour periods and comfortable with repetitive motion. A love of and appreciation for books and records is a major plus.
Commitment:
Assistance is needed Monday through Friday from 7 am to 3 pm. Position involves a minimum commitment of three hours per week, as well as a minimum commitment length of one month.
