Description:
Kentucky Campus Compact's (KyCC) goal is to improve the lives of Kentucky's citizens through helping colleges and universities connect their students with the community. The KyCC AmeriCorps VISTA Program places 15 VISTA members around the state at various colleges and universities to build the capacity for campus/community partnerships. These partnerships will result in 1) student learning that is relevant to real life challenges; and 2) community action that will address poverty related issues.
Northern Kentucky University (NKU), a member of KyCC, is a growing metropolitan public university of more than 15,000 students served by nearly 2,400 faculty and staff on a thriving suburban campus near Cincinnati. Located in the quiet suburb of Highland Heights, Kentucky, just seven miles southeast of Cincinnati, NKU has become a leader in Greater Cincinnati and Kentucky by providing a private school education for a fraction of the cost. The Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area includes 15 counties in the states of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, has a population of 2,133,678, and includes both city and rural environments.
The KyCC VISTA at NKU will develop and maintain partnership between the campus and community for the purpose of expanding university community partnerships, specifically those that relate to service and service-learning opportunities for the NKU community. The objectives of this position are to encourage student volunteerism to the community and to work with faculty to increase the number of service learning classes each semester. The VISTA member will report to both the Director of the Institute for Nonprofit Capacity (INC) and the Assistant Director of University Housing. Specifically, the member will:
• Implement programs that will support university community partnerships
• Coordinate community engagement activities and programs for students in the NKU residential village
• Coordinate professional development opportunities, such as the Service Learning lunches 3x/semester for NKU faculty and staff
• Work with the Institute for Nonprofit Capacity (INC) to match service learning opportunities in the community to NKU classes that can meet specific needs
• Work with the INC director to expand service learning on campus, and to inform the nonprofit community of INC services available to nonprofits serving the needy and others
• A small amount of local travel is required of this position
Benefits include: monthly living stipend, health coverage, child care assistance (if eligible), choice of post-service education award or stipend, relocation allowance (if eligible), student loan forbearance, non-competitive status when applying to Federal government positions, and professional development/training. NKU is also providing a meal plan and housing on campus for this position.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident; college degree, excellent communication skills, computer skills, people skills, and the ability to work with the public. As an ambassador for NKU, a neat appearance is required.
12-month, full-time commitment required. VISTA may not be enrolled in school nor hold a job for duration of term of service.
