Volunteer Coordinator VISTA
Are you an agent of change? If so, the Louisiana Bucket Brigade wants you!
The Louisiana Bucket Brigade, an environmental health and justice organization is looking for a Volunteer Coordinator.
The Louisiana Bucket Brigade, founded in 2000, is an environmental health and justice organization working with communities adjacent to the state’s oil refineries, chemical plants and other hazardous sites. Our mission is to support communities’ use of grassroots action to create sustainable neighborhoods free from industrial pollution.
The Volunteer Coordinator will develop systems for the LABB volunteer program, including recruitment, screening, orientation, and training.
Activities Include:
Recruit, screen and train 100 community volunteers.
• Create recruitment, screening, and training strategy, curricula & manual for volunteers.
• Train volunteers to train community members on doing bucket logs, filling out odor logs, filing citizen complaints, photographs and videos of flaring events, etc. and other technical assistance to respond to community calls for assistance.
• Organize community leader participation in the Fenceline Neighbors Conference – recruitment, logistics, and agenda setting.
Recruit participants in the Environmental Justice Corps.
• Network and build relationships with the region’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
• Develop program design, service-learning objectives for future EJ Corps in collaboration with HBCU key stakeholders.
• Locate other sources of support/revenue for EJ Corps within Americorps streams.
Build a base of 25 -50 volunteers to lead or assist with LABB projects:
• Identify and pursue internship programs or other programs that would be a source of labor for the LABB, including the New Voices Fellowship Program.
• Create relationships with institutions / organizations to diversify our volunteer pool, including Delgado Community College and the Council on the Aging.
• Assure preparedness of the LABB’s Rapid Response Team to leaks, spills or accidents in the community.
• Organize volunteers to work the Earth Day Festival 2010.
• Assure that there is a volunteer recruitment component and presence at all LABB events.
Qualifications and Experience:
• Possesses strong organizational, communication and writing skills
• Experience recruiting, screening and training volunteers for grassroots action
• Self starter
• Creative thinker
• Enthusiastic people person
• Ability to motivate others, especially young people, to service
• Experience coordinating events
• Experience working with all age groups, college age students a plus.
• Ability to travel extensively throughout the state and region
• Strong networking skills
• Strong commitment and passion for reducing community exposure to toxic pollution
