Description:
The project is located in a village neat Tsavo National park in the coast province of kenya. The placement is located within a village of a population of approximately 4,000 whose main economic activity is subsistence farming.
Some of the challenges the community has been facing include environmental degradation, human-wildlife conflict ( the big five and many other wild animals from the neighbouring Tsavo), lack of access to quality education, unemployment and erratic rainfall patterns leading to poor harvests and lack of water.
The placement focuses on empowering the community ecomonically through projects that will sustainably utilize the available resources with less impact on the environment and also introduction of high quality agricultural products that are of high value but are drought resistant.
The placement has two main projects; Aloe Vera farming and Elephant dung project.
1.Aloe vera farming is mainly done by 50 families in the community who have been trained by the kenya wildlife services on the farming of aloe and processing of soap, lotions and juices from the plant. The project is still at the initial stages with the production of soap having started this year (2009)
2. Elephant dung project aims at utilizing the elephants dung to make recycled paper and decorations. Elephants contribute the largest problem of the human wildlife conflict where they invade villages and destroy the crops which is a big loss to the farmers. The products ( recycled paper and decorations) are then sold to recoup some of the loses the farmers incur.
Both projects are so unique in that all the benefits solely focus on the community because they community driven projects and all the profits go back to the community. The placement also provide a great opportunity to visit the National Park at a reasonable cost where one can have a chance to see all the major wild animals from East Africa in their natural habitat.
The volunteer(s) will be joining the community on the two projects; planting and processing aloe vera and making recycled papers and decorations from the elephant dung. Any interested volunteer can also join the local women in their basket weaving project, tree planting and volunteering as teachers in the local schools.
The volunteer will pay the 100 euros registration fee which cater for;
-the volunteer airport pick up
- accommodation for one night before travel to the placement
- transport to the placement
- orientation
The volunteer will just have to provide the flight details and we will have a member of staff waiting at the airport to pick up the volunteer.
Above that the volunteer pay additional 300 euros which caters for food and accommodation per month in a host family.
