Description:
We are looking for instructors for our English as a Second Language classes. Our classes focus on speaking and listening so that students gain confidence in their ability to learn and speak English. We are looking for tutors who can work with students on Mondays for an hour, and instructors who can commit to three hours a week, Tuesday-Thursday. Our classes are very active with lots of speaking and listening practice for students, emphasizing speaking in complete sentences. Teachers orally repeat grammar patterns over and over and speak at the normal talking speed for native speakers, so that students get used to to the rhythms and patterns of sound in spoken English and gain fluency in their English speaking and teaching.
Our ESL classes are a fun way for instructors to get to know the Somali Bantu refugees and a great help to the refugees learn English.
ESL experience is helpful, but definitely not necessary! We will train all instructors on how to use the curriculum we provide and be culturally appropriate. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, dedicated, friendly, and patient. Volunteers should have a desire to get to know the Somali Bantu and other refugee populations in Tucson. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
Please contact us for more information on class scheduling. We are also looking for volunteer substitute instructors.
