VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY


Girls for Gender Equity's Urban Leaders Academy is a holistic after-school program designed to help Central Brooklyn youth achieve academic excellence, explore career options and maintain healthy lifestyles, while reducing the risk of violence and pregnancy. Support is provided by families, community members, teachers, peers and professionals who live throughout NYC and who set high standards for Urban Leaders youth to internalize community activism and self-determination as being achievable.

Volunteer Requirements:

? Must be at least 18 years of age
? Must have at least 1 year experience working with youth
? Must be available at least 1-2 days per week for 8 weeks, 1-3 hours per session, anytime between 3pm-6pm

Volunteer Responsibilities:

? Create and implement lesson plans that build teamwork, community and/ or positive self-expression for middle school youth
? Organize and implement activities that are creative, exciting, and age appropriate
? Display knowledge and skills in the development of group and individual activities
? Display willingness to take initiative and work independently

Compensation: Honorarium

Positions Available:

Girls for Gender Equity’s Youth Development Model (YDM) is composed of five overlapping core components that speak to the goals of the program. GGE is seeking volunteers to teach classes that align with these components (see several sample classes listed after each YDM component):

1. Social Justice and Community Organizing - Afro-American History, Organizing Movements

2. Social Growth and Identity - Painting, Drawing, Arts-n-Crafts, Dance, Music, Photography, Creative Writing, Health & Fitness, Yoga, Nutrition, Sports

3. Youth Leadership - Peer Mediation & Conflict Resolution, Rites of Passage

4. Education and Career – Financial Literacy, Job Etiquette & Dress, Resume Writing

5. Consciousness Raising – Violence Prevention, Pregnancy Prevention, Media Analysis

*NOTE: Individuals with expertise in a field not listed above, and which aligns with one of the five components of the Youth Development Model, should feel free to submit a course proposal.
