VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT
HREIB is seeking a volunteer with excellent research and analytical skills to join a dynamic team and help with an ongoing research project on children involved in armed conflict. Specifically, they need someone to do a law and policy comparison, investigating Burma’s commitment to international treaties (particularly the Convention on the Rights of the Child) and Burma’s laws relating to children and armed conflict.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE
To continue documentation of and research on the use of child soldiers and children in armed conflict in Burma and prepare a shadow report to the UN CRC commitment before Burma submits its periodic report in 2008.
RESEARCH THEMES
The specific themes that will be monitored are those that are listed down in the Security Council Resolution 1612:
• Killing and maiming of children
• Recruiting or using child soldiers
• Rape or other sexual violence against children
• Abduction of children
• Denial of humanitarian access for children
• Attacks against schools and hospitals.
The need to document cases has been identified by many human rights groups. Information about violations has gone unrecorded throughout the armed conflict situation in Burma. Such information is vital for lobbying at the UN CRC committee.
