Description:

Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) is an intergenerational, grassroots organization committed to the physical, psychological, social and economic development of girls and women.
Through education, organizing and physical fitness, GGE encourages communities to remove barriers and create opportunities for girls and women to live self-determined lives.

GGE targets New York City public schools based in low-income communities of color as sites to mobilize and collectively work toward gender and race equity. Through the facilitation of our core programs --Youth Organizing Program, Urban Leaders Academy After School Program, and Health and Fitness Program -- GGE has established a dual approach to grassroots organizing and service provision that builds authentic leadership and strengthens resources within the communities we serve.

Health and Fitness Program (HFP) helps NYC level the playing field by providing girls with equitable fitness activities, self-determination groups, educational health workshops, and Title IX campaigns in NYC schools and CBO's. We are seeking women volunteers to serve as mentors to girls, ages 9-14, who play basketball, in Brooklyn based elementary and middle schools. We welcome women who play and love basketball as well as those with no previous experience or interest in the sport!

Time frame: 1-2 days a week (depending on your availability) approximately 2 hours a day, during the after-school hours of 3-5 or 4-6 (depending on which school you work with, as they get out at different times), from December through May.

Commitment: A minimum of 2 hours per week for 12 weeks dedicated to lead the workshop.

Qualifications: Due to the nature of the “Go Girl Go” group, the facilitator must be female. She is expected to be punctual, energetic, and competent in all materials, and must have knowledge of youth development, urban communities, and a genuine interest to make positive impact in the lives of young people.

GGE is also in need of Assistant Coaches! Women or men with knowledge of basketball and coaching are needed, for 2 to 4 hours a week. School sites, dates, and times vary. Experience working with youth, patience, a passion for basketball, and a desire to teach are necessary.

You can make a difference in the lives of girls! In solidarity, we will level the playing field.
