Description:
Our mission at the Domestic Violence Project (DVP) is to help victims of domestic violence and their children live free of violence and abuse. We consider domestic violence in any type of relationship, regardless of gender or sexual identity, to be a human rights violation. Our work focuses on providing legal and social work services to promote justice and vigorously defend and protect victims’ human rights. To accomplish this, our attorneys and social workers provide legal representation in Family Court, mental health services, advocacy, case management, and on-going domestic violence education and outreach activities throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
How can I help? DVP staffs a legal clinic in the Bronx once a week. Volunteers will receive training from our legal staff so that they can conduct intakes and provide legal information, advice, and possibly representation to DV victims in need of assistance.
How to Apply:
Who Should Apply? DVP is looking for volunteer attorneys or law students who are committed to assisting under-served populations. A background in working with victims of domestic violence is not required; however, an interest in learning more about the issues facing these clients is critically important. Volunteers will receive valuable legal training and the opportunity to work individually with clients. Applicants must be willing to travel to the South Bronx once or twice a week.
