Descripción:
SKIP is a charity working with children and their families in the impoverished district of El Porvenir, located on the outskirts of the city of Trujillo, Peru.
SKIP funds in excess of 400 children to go to school, and also provides educational workshops for the children and their parents. Our focus is to empower people to be able to take control of their own lives and maintain financial and social stability.
In Peru there is a 3 month school break from the middle of December until March. The children we work with will have little to look forward to at this time as their parents will still need to work and there is no spare money to pay for leisure activities.
As such, SKIP provides a summer camp for the children for 7 weeks of the holiday, from the beginning of January until the end of February. We aim for the children to learn in a fun, friendly environment. Workshops focus on basic skills, reading, writing, maths and also on sports, arts, dance and anything else we can think of!
The children range in age from 5-17 years and will be divided into groups accordingly. We also run a nursery programme for the 3-4 year olds.
The scheme is always a lot of work, but also a lot of fun and hugely rewarding. We are really looking for people with a lot of enthusiasm and energy. Experience of working with children preferred, but not essential.
Volunteers are able to focus on a specific age group, if they would prefer, or can work with all age ranges. There is also the flexibility to be involved in other parts of the programme. The standard teaching programme will resume after the holidays and so anyone wanting to stay on is more than welcome to.
