Reports to: Manager, Advocacy and Public Policy
Agency Mission: To end multiple sclerosis.
This is a part time spring 2010 internship. If interested, the internship can be extended through summer.
There are many public policies and programs that greatly influence the health, independence and well being of people with MS. At the National MS Society, advocacy encompasses the Society’s efforts to influence the public and private sectors to obtain benefits and resources for people with MS and their families. Most of our advocacy is directed toward the public sector, where we work largely with the legislative branch of federal, state and local units of governments.
Primary Responsibilities:
Support the Chapter’s advocacy efforts in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. by:
§Researching key issues and legislation for each jurisdiction
§Preparing for 2010 Advocacy Day events Richmond, VA and Annapolis, MD as well as at the Washington DC Council.
§Providing extra staff support at Advocacy Day events.
§Supporting grass roots outreach and helping to grow the volunteer base
§Developing communication materials
§Attending coalition meetings throughout the metro area
Skills Desired:
1.Interest in public policy, advocacy, and grass roots outreach
2.Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
3.Comfortable speaking to others and working with a variety of people
4.Familiarity with Microsoft Programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, Powerpoint)
5.Ability to work independently and take initiative
