Description:

Maranatha Beach Lodge is an eco-hotel, set on an idyllic strip of beach on an estuary between the Bay of Benin and the Volta Delta. The Lodge is designed to support and include the local community, providing funds for conservation and the overall sustainable development of this neighbouring village. Through our endeavours, we hope to educate travellers; promoting and engaging them with minority cultures and the natural beauty of West Africa.
The organization serves the rural communities located adjacent to the beach camp. The villagers in these communities live in extremely basic conditions, with no running water, electricity, or sanitation infrastructure.

BaseCamp has partnered with this organization to improve sanitation for the Kewunor people. We will be building traditional pitt toilets this January, 2010! This will be a very special project for the locals, as they currently have no sanitation infrastructure. We need volunteers to come and help with all aspects of the building project.

Volunteers can assist by doing the following tasks:
Volunteers will be required to help dig the pitt, mix cement, create the support, build the structure, assemble the toilets, and create the walls! You will be working alongside the locals to complete this project - a great way to embrace the Ghanaian culture.Volunteers will also be able to teach at the school, develop after school programming, give health awareness talks and sessions, create health related resources, initiate beach clean up days, and develop their own projects and initiatives!
Volunteers should be hard working, outgoing, positive, and able to adapt to changing situations. Volunteers should also be able to live without running water (although you will have a river and ocean located directly beside you!), limited electricity, and with basic toilet facilities (pitt toilets but you have a Western-style seat).

Volunteers with the following specific skills are preferred for this placement:
Engineer
Engineering Student
Metal Worker
Carpenter
Framer
Drywall
Mason
Equipment
Project Management

Sanitation System Design
