A little like house hunting

Think of your nonprofit job search the way you might think about the process of finding a new place to live.

First, you might go online to learn about the local market: housing prices, neighborhoods and trends, and available property.

After a bit of research online, you might chat with people you know to ask about their experiences finding a place and about the neighborhoods they live in. They might know of people looking for roommates, or selling their house. In other words, you might activate your network.

Finally, you'd take a look at open properties in person, attend open houses, investigate structures, notice neighborhood culture and assets, and get a feel for the area.

These steps of going online, chatting in-person, and on-site are very similar to the steps you'd take in finding jobs to apply for.
