Issue and/or Value

A lens through which to view your career.

An issue is a matter of public or personal concern. A value is something deeply important to you. People who enter public service careers through the lens of "issue" or "value" may champion a cause — such as helping people find housing, or developing the assets of teen parents — and may be motivated by a range of values — like principles of compassion and community.

The next steps for you, if you're entering from the lens of "issue" or "value" are to figure out:

  • What role you would like to play to tackle your issue or act on your value
  • What organizations are approaching the issue with a similar set of values
  • What system you'd best work within
  • What population or ecosystem you'd like your work to benefit

Often organizations exist to address a specific issue.

Examples of "issue":
