What kinds of organizations can have pages on Idealist?

These are the types of organizations that we welcome on Idealist:

  • Nonprofit and community organizations (including NGOs, community groups, schools and universities, high school and college clubs, unions, foundations, and campaigns)
  • Government agencies (including museums, libraries, parks and recreation departments, environmental protection agencies, social services, schools and universities, and community service programs)
  • Social enterprises: companies whose primary mission is to solve a social problem
  • Vendors or suppliers to nonprofits: these include companies that provide services primarily to nonprofit organizations (such as fundraising, grant writing, recruitment, and consulting)
  • Recruiting firms that only post positions on behalf of nonprofit clients
  • Businesses that are mandated by the government to have volunteer programs (such as hospices)

We currently do not allow personal web pages/projects, organizations or schools still in the planning stages (i.e. charter schools awaiting their charter), for-profit schools, microfinance organizations, or military or intelligence groups to create pages on Idealist.

Do you review or edit posted content?

We do not edit content posted by organizations or individual members, but we do review some of it before it is published.

We review all new organization pages as they are created, to confirm that they were posted by someone from that organization and that they belong on Idealist. All other content (listings, individual profiles, etc.) can be published immediately without review, but we encourage you to report anything that's inappropriate or inaccurate.

My organization is already on Idealist. How can I become an administrator?

To become an administrator of your organization's page, you'll first need to log in or sign up as an individual. Then, search for your organization from the search bar, go to your organization's page, and click on the blue "Become an administrator" button on the right side of the page. You'll have the option to send a request to your page's existing administrators or to let us know if the listed administrators are no longer with your organization, in which case we can approve you as an administrator as quickly as possible.

What's the difference between an owner and an administrator?

The person who originally creates the organization page is the owner. The owner is like a super-administrator who has all permissions, including the permission to delete the organization's page altogether and to manage the permissions of other administrators.

To promote an administrator to owner status, go to your org page and click "See all" under the list of administrators on the right. Then click "Promote to owner."

Is Idealist free to use?

It's free to sign up, search for opportunities, connect with others, create a page for your organization, and post events, volunteer opportunities, internships, programs, and resources.

We do charge U.S.-based organizations $70 for each job posted, but be sure to check out Job Packs for reduced rates.

How do I delete my organization?

To delete your organization's page from Idealist, you must be the owner of that page. The owner is either the person who originally set up the page, or someone who has been promoted from administrator to owner. To become an owner, you must ask the current owner to promote you.

If you are already an owner, go to the "Edit" screen for your organization. From there, click the link on the left that says "Delete account."

How do I get a feed of Idealist content?

We offer two types of feeds:

RSS feeds: From any search results page, you can click the orange RSS logo to get the RSS link for that specific search. You can then subscribe to updates to those search results using an RSS reader.

Atom feeds: These are a type of XML feed that you can use to display the latest Idealist listings on your site. Click here for more information about this format. To set up an atom feed on your organization's site, please contact us.
