Campus Work History

Prior to the C.O.O.L. (Campus Outreach Opportunity League) merger during the summer of 2003, the campus programs of Action Without Borders/Idealist.org focused primarily on making nonprofit careers more visible and accessible to students.

With the most extensive online listings/directory/database of nonprofit jobs and internships, Idealist.org has always attracted a large number of young people looking for ways to get involved. We kept them updated and engaged through our "My Idealist" Daily Email Updates, featuring nonprofit jobs, internships, volunteer opportunities, and other ways for them to get involved.

This email list of individuals, coupled with our extensive network of nonprofit organizations helped us organize Idealist.org Nonprofit Career Fairs at college and university campuses across the country. These events bring together local and national nonprofits with job, internship, and volunteer openings with individuals specifically interested in nonprofit opportunities. The fairs are open to the entire community, and are supported by local partnerships with universities and associations.

As a result of these events, which were facilitated by building strong relationships with careers services professionals and others on campus, we developed Idealist Career Days and Campus Trainings. These presentations are designed to make nonprofit and socially responsible careers more visible to college students and recent graduates, as well as to give them tools and resources for building more effective civic engagement programs.

The fairs also introduced us to many career services professionals with an interest in and commitment to connecting their students to nonprofit careers, and encouraged us to create a National Advisory Board of College and University Career Services Professionals. Consisting of over thirty OCS (Office of Career Services) professionals from a diverse group of schools, the Advisory Board helps shape the strategy of our career-related programs, and develops resources and materials for our wider audience.

In addition to this programmatic work, we developed deeper partnerships with a handful of universities and organizations across the country that host our events and help support our work. One of these was C.O.O.L., which resulted in our decision to join forces and create the Idealist On Campus program.
