Building Bridges on Campus - Our Ideas

The University of Vermont's Community Partner Link

From Carrie Williams, Associate Director, Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning, University of Vermont

At the University of Vermont, there are a variety of offices that work with the community in many different ways. There are community service programs out of Student Life, there are non-profit work-study partnerships and Service-Learning internships out of Career Services, there are academic service-learning projects in the office of Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning, and there are a variety of community outreach programs through Residential Life, the Center for Student Ethics, UVM Extension, and a number of other offices. Community members, as well as those of us on campus, have never been quite sure who to call for what needs. A bridge was definitely called for.

In an effort that began as the "Mapping Project" a group of people at UVM set out to create a resource that would bring together all of the service-related offices on campus in the form of a user-friendly and informative resource. This "Map" was designed to bring together opportunities for faculty, students, staff, and community partners to create collaborative partnerships. It was to serve as a directory of sorts, that a person could use to find a variety of possibilities. A committee was formed to decide on the format of this "map," and to gather the necessary resources to create it. Representatives from all of the above offices participated, and the result was a collaboration that truly built bridges between offices that had so often lacked a means for communicating between each other. The product, a website, builds a bridge to community members who so often feel tossed around or hesitant to even contact the school due to the confusing nature of so many offices. It brings attention to the numerous opportunities that exist for students, building a bridge that connects their interest to a variety of offices. And, it serves as a resource for faculty and staff at UVM who want to learn about these offices or contact their counterparts who are doing such similar work.

The "Community Partner Link" website is truly a bridge across many lines at UVM and in the Vermont Community. The participating offices include:

  • Community-University Partnerships & Service-Learning
  • The Department of Student Life
  • The Career Services Office
  • UVM Extension
  • The Office of Residential Life
  • The Center for Student Ethics and Standards
