Volunteer organizations

These organizations offer programs for young people to volunteer locally and all over the world.

Most of them will help you take care of the details of your experience but, if you're interested in volunteering beyond your local community, chances are you'll have to pay for your travel and living expenses. Here are some resources that can give you ideas on how to fund your trip.

International/Open to everyone

Canada World Youth
Canada World Youth offers volunteer exchange programs for people ages 17 to 25 from Canada and overseas. Participants must pay a $250 (Canadian) participation fee and are expected to raise $,1500 for Canada World Youth (they train on you how to fundraise in your community). The organization pays for all travel and living expenses during the exchange program.

Community Service Volunteers (CSV)
Over 400 people come to Britain each year from countries world-wide to volunteer with CSV. Volunteers face the challenge of living and working in another country and have the opportunity to make a real difference to people's lives. All volunteers receive a weekly allowance, accommodation, and food at their project. CSV works in partnership with voluntary organizations, NGOs, and educational institutes in 20 countries to enable overseas volunteers to come to the United Kingdom for a period of between four and twelve months to volunteer on full-time placements. When inquiring about CSV, please ask for the "International Team in Volunteering Partners."

Conservation Volunteers
Conservation Volunteers offer six-week volunteer opportunities for visitors to Australia who are 15 and older. Volunteers work on projects ranging from reconstructing trails to surveying fauna to planting trees in the rainforests. The current fee for participating in a six week project is $966.00 (Au).

Free the Children
Free the Children is an international network of children helping children. The site offers lots of ways to get involved locally and internationally, from starting a Youth in Action group in your community to going abroad and helping build a school in Kenya.

Global Routes
Global Routes places high school students in Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, and Latin America for four- to six-week volunteer trips. During the program you'll live with a local family while volunteering on a community project. The last week of your program will be spent travelling around the surrounding country. In Thailand you may go on an elephant trek, or in Tanzania you might go on a safari. Project fees range from $3,450 to $4,450, not including airfare.

Global Volunteer Network
Global Volunteer Network places international volunteers in service programs in Ecuador, Nepal, and New Zealand. Participants work on educational and community aid projects such as teaching English, promoting health and sanitation, and monitoring dolphins. All projects include time for volunteers to do sightseeing. Visit the Web site for program fees and time commitments, which vary depending on the project. The application fee is $250. You must be 16 or older to participate.

High School Programs Abroad
Thinking of lending a hand abroad? This site offers a list of study abroad programs by country and subject area. It includes programs in community service/volunteerism, language immersion, and cultural exploration.

Insights School of Experiential Education
Insights offers 22- and 33-day programs in Ecuador, Canada's British Columbia, and Costa Rica. Participants volunteer on Habitat for Humanity projects, work alongside marine mammal scientists and naturalists, or assist conservationists studying rainforest ecology. Fees vary depending on the program and length, but are between $3,780 and $4,980, not including airfare. You must be between the ages of 17 and 21 to participate.

International Christian Youth Exchange (ICYE)
ICYE offers international volunteer exchange programs for people ages 16 to 25. Participants are hosted by a family and spend up to a year working on a community project or attending secondary school. Examples of past experiences are assisting in a hospital in Ghana, working in an Environmental Education Project in Costa Rica and Mexico, and working and living with disabled people in Italy, France, and Japan.

Junior Optimist Octagon International (JOOI)
With more than 16,000 members in over 650 communities, JOOI members are constantly working to promote positive change in their communities. Their motto is "Kids Serving Kids." Members, ages 6 to 18, work to promote positive change in their communities through local clubs which enable kids' service projects.

Key Club International
Key Club International is a volunteer service organization of individual Key Clubs in different parts of the world that offers their members a wide range of benefits from college scholarships to service-learning opportunities.

Religious Youth Services
Religious Youth Services (RYS) encourages inter-faith cooperation through community service projects for young people around the world, ages 16 to 30. You do not have to be actively practicing a religion to particpate and there is no proselytizing on the projects. Recent RYS volunteers have created a children's park in Albania, worked at community center for street children in Indonesia, and built a community center in Northern Thailand. There is a fee to volunteer with RYS, however, some scholarship money is available.

Conservation Volunteers
Conservation Volunteers offers week-long volunteer opportunities for Australians, 15 and older, who are interested in helping to preserve Australia's environment. One-day and weekend opportunities are also available.

GreenCorps
If you're between 17 and 20 years old, interested in helping preserve Australia's environment and can commit to six months of full-time volunteering, the GreenCorps might be perfect for you. Participants receive a small stipend during training.

World Vision Australia
Looking for a way to make a real difference in the world? Are you sick of talk and want to see some action? Want to have fun, meet people, and learn teamwork or leadership skills at the same time? Join World Vision's youth movement!

Youth Challenge Australia
Since 1989, Youth Challenge Australia (YCA), a partner organization of Youth Challenge International, has implemented 30 major field programs in Guyana, Costa Rica, and Vanuatu, involving over 2,500 youth volunteers from 16 countries. Volunteers, aged between 18 and 30, have helped build and repair health posts, schools, aqueducts, wells and bridges, have assisted local biologists and park ranges preserve and reclaim rainforests and have worked with health professionals in HIV/Aids and malaria awareness campaigns. The projects last an average of ten weeks. Volunteers must raise $4,750 (Australian) to pay for their travel and living expenses.

Canada World Youth
Canada World Youth offers exchange programs for people ages 17-25 from Canada and overseas. Katimavik
Katimavik offers Canadians ages 17-21 the opportunity to spend seven months volunteering in three different provinces in Canada.

Youth Challenge International
Youth Challenge International (YCI) is a Toronto based organization founded in 1989 that aims to provide young people, ages 16-25, with field experience in development work. The three programs offered by YCI vary according to age and take place in Costa Rica, Guyana or Vanuatu.

Youth Cyberstation
Developed by the Ministry of Canadian Heritage, the Youth Cyberstation has resources and information about volunteering in Canada.

Centre National de Voluntariat: Le Service Jeunesse
The National Volunteer Center of France, based in Paris, started the "Service Jeunesse" program to encourage young people to volunteer and get involved in their communities.



Israel

The Israeli Center for Youth Volunteerism
Located in Tel Aviv, the Center engages in training and consulting for organizations that involve youth volunteers, undertakes research on the topic of youth volunteerism, houses a resource center, advocates for changes in legislation that will facilitate increased volunteerism, and encourages young people to volunteer.

Noar Le Noar-Israel
Noar Le Noar is a youth-led organization that encourages Israeli youth to volunteer.



United Kingdom

Community Service Volunteers
Community Service Volunteers (CSV) is a UK based organization that provides volunteer opportunities for people ages 16-35 in the United Kingdom. The length of projects ranges from four to twelve months. Volunteers are provided free accommodation and food, and in some cases are given a small weekly stipend.

The organizations listed in this section accept youth volunteers from all over the United States.

Amigos
Amigos offers people ages 16 and older the opportunity to volunteer for up to eight weeks in Latin America. Volunteers are expected to pay for their travel and living expenses.

Camp Fire USA
Camp Fire USA's Teens in Action program empowers teens to speak out and stand up in their communities. Camp Fire members are impacting violence in their communities through peer mediation, legislative involvement, mentoring and tutoring programs, community education, violence-prevention special events, and much, much more.

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity brings communities together to help build houses for those in need of adequate shelter. JewishService.org
JewishService.org is a network of Jewish service organizations that provide opportunities for Jewish youth and adults to engage in tikkun olam, repair of the world. This Web site lists several six-week community service projects in the United States and Israel that are open to high school students.

Landmark Volunteers
Landmark Volunteers places high school students (ages 14 to 18) in two-week volunteer projects around the United States restoring historic landmarks, preserving the environment, or helping out at local nonprofit organizations. Most of the volunteer opportunities involve manual labor such as painting, clearing trails, building and restoring structures. Participants must pay between $710 and $750 dollars for the two week experience. This fee is tax deductible.

The Student Conservation Association, Inc.
Through SCA Conservation Crews high school students spend approximately 1 month during the summer engaged in service projects around the United Statesdoing restoration and trail work to preserve the environment and develop outdoor and leadership skills. There are no program fees or tuition.

Visions Service Adventures
Interested in spending your summer volunteering in Dominica, Peru, Alaska or Guadeloupe? Visions Service Adventures offers volunteer projects in these countries and others for people ages 14-18 during the summer months. There is a fee to participate in the program, usually $2,000-$3,000.

Wilderness Volunteers
Wilderness Volunteers was set up to provide people with experience in preserving America's "wild lands." The organization works closely with the National Park Service, the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to design the projects. Participants must be 16 years of age or older. There is a fee to participate.

Youth Volunteer Corps of America
If you're between the ages of 11-18, and you want to volunteer, the chapter of the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC)in your area can help you find opportunities. With the YVC you'll be working with other young people who share your interests helping your community. Click on "Locations" on the homepage to find the chapter nearest you.
