Further Information About the Nonprofit FAQ

Summary:

Answers to several questions that are often addressed to the editor.

Answer:

  • I can no longer find The Nonprofit Locater. What happened?
  • The Nonprofit Locater records were destroyed by a hacker in November of 1999. After considering our resources, we have decided not to try to restore these files. Data about many nonprofit organizations can be found at Idealist.org or Guidestar or by looking for the organization's name with a search engine like Google.

  • I am a student looking for a scholarship. Can you help me?
  • Check out the Financial Aid Information Page.

  • We are a nonprofit with a web page. Would you please add a link
    to us?
  • We only provide links to general directories or sites
of general interest. We do not link to web pages
of individual organizations. The publisher of the Nonprofit FAQ, Action Without Borders, also created Idealist.org for posting information about organizations on a searchable and classified web site. Organizations without webpages can post information there. Those with web sites can add a direct link to their own information. So visit Idealist at http://www.idealist.org (a service of Action Without Borders). You can review others' information at this directory of nonprofit web sites. Information on how to add information about a new organization is at http://www.idealist.org/neworg.

  • I am an individual in dire straits. Can you help me?
  • No. We have no resources to provide assistance to individuals. You might try searching at Idealist for information about a nearby charity that works to help people in situations similar to yours.

  • I am looking for a job in the nonprofit sector. Any suggestions?
  • There are several different strategies you might consider:

    • The publisher of the Nonprofit FAQ -- Action Without Borders -- has extensive advice for job-seekers in its Career Center at http://www.idealist.org/career/career.html. Many nonprofit jobs are announced through notices at the Idealist website.
    • Use the information provided in the Nonprofit FAQ under "Job Listings".
    • Search further for more online job databases, especially the ones that
focus on nonprofits. Go to your favorite search engines (Yahoo,
InfoSeek, Alta Vista, etc.) and find them. Check out Goodworks,
the Chronicle of Higher Education, Opportunity NOCS, Nonprofit
      Jobs.
    • Go to individual web sites for organizations that especially interest
you. Many post jobs on their web sites.
    • Monitor the newsgroups and email lists that often carry job opening
      announcements.
    • Participate in newsgroup and list discussions, forming friendships
and professional relationships with peers in the field. Ask around
      informally to learn what's available.
    • Become an expert in a particular field. There may not be thousands
of openings, but when there is a job description that fits your
qualifications, you will have the best chance at getting the offer.
    • Put online a useful nonprofit resource. Make a name for yourself
by doing something other people value. You'll acquire contacts
naturally that may eventually lead to a job.
