Note: This job is primarily remote, with 10% travel required. Starting salary range of $70,600 -$78,400, and based on the Washington, D.C./DMV area. Compensation will be adjusted up or down for other geographic locations.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate, Government Affairs will support the Government Affairs team to cultivate a policy environment in which philanthropy can thrive, including the team’s Congressional engagement, federal partnerships, and strategic initiatives. The Associate will also work with the Council’s members to increase their knowledge of and effectiveness in public policy, working with government, and advocacy.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Monitor legislation and other legislative actions at the state and federal levels related to the Council’s policy priorities.
  • Track policy-related news, publications, and other commentary from a variety of sources, and disseminate information to the Council.
  • Develop written materials for internal and external audiences (e.g. Hill one-pagers, research briefs, and report summaries) in support of congressional engagement, emerging issues research, and member engagement work.
  • Handle incoming requests from federal agencies, congressional staff, and Council members.
  • Maintain departmental databases, webpages, advocacy tools, and Salesforce.
  • Provide logistical support for external committees, such as Federal Liaisons, Public Policy Advisory Committee, and others.
  • Coordinate and support for strategic initiatives, including Values-Aligned Philanthropy, Policy and Advocacy Training Center, and federal partnerships.
  • Act as a liaison to cross-functional projects, activities, and working groups.
  • Provide general administrative and logistical support for the team and larger department.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3 years of relevant work experience in government relations, public/economic policy, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the capability to execute the responsibilities of this role (4 years of applicable experience preferred).

POSITION SPECIFIC COMPENTENCIES

  • Basic understanding of how the federal government and its agencies are structured and interrelate.
  • Knowledge and understanding of legislative, regulatory, and federal agency processes (e.g. public policy or  congressional).
  • Basic understanding of foundations and their purpose in philanthropy.
  • Interest in tax policy.

GENERAL COMPETENCIES (REQUIRED OF ALL STAFF)

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to listen well, and positively represent the organization and its mission.

  • Strong project management and analytical skills, maintain productivity, and successfully meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively and positively both independently and on a team with a range of individuals and working styles, and with people at all organization levels including staff, board members, foundation officers, donors, and vendors.
  • Experience or ability to use CRM database solutions, helpful but not required.
  • Proficient skill in Microsoft Office 365 applications.
