The Museum of African Culture

Sobre Nós

The Museum of African Culture is a non-profit organization created to interpret and preserve a unique collection of sub-Saharan African art; to expand understanding of African cultures through educational programs that incorporate art, music, storytelling, films, poetry, and spiritual ceremony; and finally, to enrich the communities of Maine and beyond through the celebration of diversity.

Founded in 1998 in Portland Maine by Oscar Mokeme and Art Aleshire, the museum is the only institution in northern New England devoted exclusively to sub-Saharan African arts and culture. There are over 1,500 pieces in the collection of the Museum, ranging from large-scale, elaborately carved wooden masks to smaller scale figures, cast copper alloy (bronze) figures, textiles, utilitarian objects, ceramic, bones, ivory and composite objects.
