National Alliance on Mental Illness, San Francisco affiliate

We are the San Francisco affiliate of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), one of nearly 1,000 local affiliates known by its acronym NAMI or NAMI San Francisco.

With some 200,000 members, NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots, volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with mental illnesses through advocacy and education efforts. We understand that mental illness deeply affects whole families; not just the person with an illness.

The primary goals of NAMI San Francisco are to: 

1. Promote the empowerment of individuals with mental illness and their loved ones to pursue wellness in their lives as they define it and to advocate for themselves within the mental health system and in the design of their treatment plan/health maintenance plan.

2. Advocate for the public understanding and acceptance of mental illnesses as no different from physical illnesses and disability.

3. Work towards achieving unified delivery of mental health services, easily accessible to all, in the place of the existing multifarious, disjointed and over-complicated systems.
