Title:

Volunteer Opportunity: Eco tourism in Ghana

Purpose of this Project:

The Ecotourism in Ghana volunteer project aims to promote sustainable tourism practices and raise

awareness about the country's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. By participating

in this project, volunteers will contribute to the preservation of Ghana's natural resources, support local communities, and engage in educational activities.

Subjects to be taught:

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to teach various subjects related to ecotourism and

environmental conservation. Some of the topics you may cover include:

1. Sustainable tourism practices

2. Biodiversity and conservation

3. Local culture and heritage

4. Environmental protection and waste management

5. Community development and empowerment

Role Description:

As a volunteer in the Ecotourism in Ghana project, your primary role will be to assist local

communities and organizations in implementing sustainable tourism initiatives.

Your tasks may include:

1. Assisting with ecotourism activities, such as guided nature walks, wildlife monitoring, and

eco-friendly accommodation management.

2. Conducting educational workshops and presentations on environmental conservation and

sustainable practices.

3. Collaborating with local communities to develop and promote eco-friendly tourism initiatives.

4. Participating in community engagement programs aimed at empowering local residents and promoting cultural exchange.

5. Supporting the planning and organization of ecotourism events and campaigns.

Work Activities:

During your volunteer period, you can expect to engage in a variety of activities, including:

1. Participating in hands-on conservation efforts, such as reforestation projects and beach

cleanups.

2. Assisting local guides in leading nature tours and educating visitors about the local flora and

fauna.

3. Conducting research on the local ecosystem and contributing to scientific data collection.

4. Developing and implementing educational materials and workshops for local schools and

communities.

5. Collaborating with local stakeholders to identify and address sustainability challenges in the

tourism industry.

Skills & Qualifications:

To be an effective volunteer in this project, it is beneficial to possess the following skills and

qualifications:

1. Passion for environmental conservation and sustainable tourism practices.

2. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

3. Flexibility and adaptability in cross-cultural environments.

4. Basic knowledge of ecology, biodiversity, or related fields.

5. Previous experience in teaching, community engagement, or tourism is an advantage but not

mandatory.

Orientation & Training:

Upon arrival, volunteers will receive an orientation session to familiarize themselves with

the local culture, project goals, and safety protocols. You will also receive training on specific project activities, teaching methodologies, and relevant ecological information. The orientation and training sessions are designed to ensure that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to make a meaningful contribution during your volunteering period.

Project Start Date:

The project is ongoing throughout the year, and volunteers can join at any time. The duration of the

volunteer commitment can vary from a few weeks to several months, depending on your availability and the specific project requirements.

Materials to Bring With:

It is recommended that volunteers bring the following materials:

1. Comfortable and lightweight clothing suitable for outdoor activities.

2. Sturdy walking shoes or boots.

3. Sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat to protect against the sun.

4. Personal toiletries and any necessary medications.

5. A reusable water bottle to minimize plastic waste.

Airport Destination to Kotoka International Airport, Accra:

Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, volunteers will be greeted by the staff of the

Empowerment for Sustainable Livelihood (EFSL). They will provide assistance with airport formalities, including visa processing and baggage claim. Volunteers will be guided to their accommodation and given an introduction to the project and local culture.

Familiarization with Our Culture:

During your volunteer period, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture

of Ghana. EFSL will organize cultural orientation sessions to familiarize volunteers with Ghanaian customs, traditions, and local languages. You will also have opportunities to engage with local communities, taste traditional cuisine, and participate in cultural events and festivals.

Places to Visit in Ghana:

During your free time or weekends, you can explore various fascinating destinations in Ghana,

including:

1. Accra: Ghana's capital city, offering vibrant markets, historical sites, and lively nightlife.

2. Kakum National Park: Home to the famous canopy walkway and diverse wildlife.

3. Mole National Park: A haven for elephants, baboons, and other wildlife species.

4. Kumasi: The cultural center of Ghana, known for its traditional crafts and vibrant festivals.

5. Busua Beach: A picturesque beach known for its surfing opportunities and relaxed atmosphere.

6. St. George's Castle: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and former slave fort in Cape Coast.

7. Nzulezu Ghana: A unique stilt village built on Lake Tadane, accessible only by boat.

8. Lake Volta: The largest man-made lake in the world, offering fishing and boating opportunities.

9. Kokrobite Beach: A popular beach destination for swimming, drumming, and dancing.

10. Paga Crocodile Pond: Interact with friendly crocodiles and learn about their conservation.

11. Labadi Beach: A bustling beach known for its lively atmosphere and local food stalls.

12. Lake Bosumtwe: A peaceful crater lake surrounded by lush forests, perfect for relaxation and

hiking.
