Skills and Characteristics
While any employer will indicate they are seeking people with good communication skills these are critical for success in rural non-profit work. You must be able to communicate with all levels and types of people. You also must be able to communicate using
technology.
You must be computer literate and able to learn new software programs. Often size and resource limitations within an agency require people to be multi-tasked.
You must be relatable to numerous groups. You must be able to blend into every situation.
You must be visionary. You must be able to see the picture is bigger than the community and then relate that vision to the community.
You must take advantage of any training that is offered.
You must be resourceful and know your skill set and how to use it in the organization.
You must be sensitive but thick skinned.
You must be persistent.
You must be an idealist in that you can generate ideas and see and think outside the box.
You must be able to work independently.
You must be a people person, able and willing to get out and talk to people.
You must have internal fortitude and a huge heart.
You must have savvy for life and want to give back to the community.
