Rural Issues

Advice from People in the Field

This advice is offered from people working in administrative and applied positions in non-profit agencies in the rural west. There are many things that distinguish rural non-profit work from urban non-profit work. Often rural non-profit agencies are small in terms of staffing and resources and at times people can disappear into the monotony of doing the same things over and over with few results. It is critical that you break out of that pattern and get out into the community. You must keep a positive attitude even after day in and day out of great effort with sometimes minimal results. You must overcome isolation. Many communities have their own niches and you must find ways to gain access. As an outsider you will have to present yourself with realistic perspective to gain respect and then you will be seen as an expert. You may be judged harshly in rural communities if you are an outsider. You must fulfill every promise you make, big and small. The plus side of this is that one person can often make a difference and most people in these agencies are not there to make dollars but are there because they want to be.

Also, go and get involved in any education/training opportunities you can find outside of the community. These will regenerate you.

Volunteer in agencies; there are many ways to do this and many schools offer internship credit for these experiences.
