Rural Issues

Personal Stories

Rachel offered the following story from her volunteer work manning the on-call 24-hour SAFE hotline. It was late at night when she got the call from a woman needing to find a safe shelter for herself and her two children. Rachel was able to get them away from an abusive situation and into the SAFE House Shelter. The woman was so grateful and thankful. That meant a lot to Rachel and came at a point when she really needed it. Crisis work is hard and thank yous are important.

Patrick was amazed at how quickly he could become involved at the national level of Habitat. He fells that Habitat for Humanity organizations located in rural communities have in the past been the minority voice at the national level. He really feels that the rural organizations have established a toehold on a national basis and have a good solid voice. It has been personally gratifying to make a difference at this level. He also says that most days what he does doesn't feel like a job and that it feels good to come to work, and it still feels good at the end of the day.

"I am tired and dirty - really tired and really dirty. I've just finished an internship and it feels nothing like turning in a paper or finishing and exam. Not only do I need a cup of strong coffee, I need a shower and a week's worth of sleep in my own bed. Strangely, though, I feel great. I've spent the last week on the Coleville Indian Reservation in a part of northern Washington state so remote we had to take a small ferry to get there. I worked with a team of veterinarians, veterinary students, and representatives from the Humane Society of the United States to offer a weeklong clinic for spaying and neutering pets, and to conduct animal-care seminars on the reservationThe project is part of a campaign called Native Nations that is designed to raise awareness of animal-population problems on Indian reservations."

From The Chronicle of Higher Education, Blending Academics and Activism, by Courtney Davis, July 30, 2002.

The needs of rural American are as great and varied as the landscape. People here really can make a difference.
