What was your first job after college and how did you get it?
I had a month-long job the summer after graduating coordinating a farm tour and taste of local foods. A food study circle that I belonged to sponsored the event; I got the job by already being involved.
How did you get your current job?
I heard of the Congressional Hunger Center during a service trip to Washington, D.C. I applied for the fellowship during my senior year at Denison.
What experiences and/or course work in college best prepared you for this job or influenced your decision to do this work?
Through my background in environmental studies, I became very interested in sustainable agriculture. I also went on service trips every college winter break that dealt with hunger and homelessness. The combination led me to think
about food in lots of different ways. My current position lets me look at solutions to hunger and food issues from both grassroots and policy levels, which I enjoy.
Any regrets? What experiences and/or course work might have better prepared you for this work?
I wish I knew how to design web pages and do GIS. Another skill that can be useful in the hunger arena is Spanish. Also, I wish I knew more about economics.
Have you attended graduate school or are you considering graduate school? What degree do you have/would you want and why? Are there any limitations to advancement in your field if you do not have a certain graduate degree?
I will most likely obtain a masters degree in agricultural development (or related field) or go to seminary.
