Advice
What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field?
The Community Food Security Coalition has interesting information about addressing both agriculture and hunger issues. Sweet Charity by Janet Poppendieck is a great look at our nation's emergency food system. Wendell Berry writes wonderfully about sustainable agriculture and rural communities.

What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work?
Why do you want to work on food system issues? I ask because the pay isn't necessarily the greatest, but if you really care about what you're doing, the rewards are immense.

What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)?
Attending conferences will always bring in new perspectives but not always give enough information about a given topic. Conferences are also wonderful places to make contacts! Don't be afraid to share what you're doing and ask others for their advice. Sustained mentoring from my professors and from supervisors provides space and guidance for long-term growth.

What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer?
Why do you want to do this work (It can involve low pay, so be prepared to show your commitment and how you want to do this)?

What other advice would you give people who want to do this work?
Be prepared to be challenged, and build a support network of others who are working on hunger to talk with about the issues you face. You will learn a lot from each other, and it will be a nice way to vent. (Luckily, the Hunger Fellows program has this community built in).
