Advice
What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field? |
I really enjoy nonfiction books like There Are No Children Here, The Welfare Queen, Savage Inequalities, etc. They are easier to read than straight statistics, but give great insight into the field.

What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work? |
Why do you want to do this? Are you willing to give of yourself? Do you enjoy working with young adults?
In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field? |
Working directly in the after-school programs with the teens. Doing education support, community organizing, becoming involved.
What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field? |
With the current Republican party in office it is a constant battle against people who think teen pregnancy prevention should be abstinence-based.
What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)? |
The best learning is done from a mentor or colleague who can give on-the-job education and teach by example.
What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer? |
What would you bring to this job that another candidate would not?
What other advice would you give people who want to do this work? |
If you are having a hard time getting in to the nonprofit field, or any field that you are interested in, volunteer or ask to shadow someone for a day. Anything you can do where you have exposure and experience will put you ahead of
others.
