Chronicle of Philanthropy, Chronicle of Higher Education, Council for Advancement and Support of Education, Independent Sector, Council on Foundations, and local newspapers

What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work?
What is your passion?

In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field?
Admissions counselors, annual fund directors

What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field?
  1. Leveraging the prestige and power of higher education for social change.
  2. Making Universities more responsive to their communities.
  3. Using advancement efforts to promote greater giving and volunteering.
  4. Engaging lifelong learners and teachers.
Challenge: The social criticism from all sides due to the failure to adequately address these issues.

What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)?
  1. Having a mentor
  2. Being a mentor (where you learn most — if you listen)
  3. Conferences — for networking and rejuvenation.
  4. Industry publications.
  5. Keeping engaged in something totally different to inform the work you do each day.


What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer?
Why shouldn't I hire someone with more experience? (This is a trap — you have plenty of experience)

What other advice would you give people who want to do this work?
When the three frustrating things loom larger than the three great things — get out.
