Advice
What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field? |
Chronicle of Philanthropy, City Limits
What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work? |
How well do you understand the connection between funding and program work? Can you bridge the gap between front-line community programming people and people who can finance community programming — two groups that often do not
understand or trust one another?
In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field? |
Direct services — most jobs require common sense, creativity, and empathy. They also allow a person to build a base of experience that is useful later when working on broader programming issues.
What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field? |
collaborative programming, outcome-based funding (having to quantify what you did with a grant (for good or bad)).
What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)? |
I have never found conferences useful — ever. Mentors, on the other hand, are everything — someone who will share their direct experience and who will help problem-solve.
What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer? |
What prepares you to do this kind of work? (This is a ridiculous question that kind of has no good answer but comes up all the time)
What other advice would you give people who want to do this work? |
Unless you have children to feed, don't consider the money in the beginning — over time, it is possible to make a decent living.
