What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field? |
Anything written by Clarence Jordan or Millard Fuller. Additionally any periodical dealing with philanthropy or faith-based initiatives.
What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work? |
Why? What do you hope to gain from this experience? Where do you see yourself in 1, 2, 5, 10 years? Who do you admire and why? How do you feel you can better our organization? and How can we help better you?
In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field? |
Any position from executive director to construction coordinator. We have our greatest need nationally in resource development, funding and volunteer recruitment.
What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field? |
Affordable housing is a key issue facing all of America. From that issue stem domestic abuse, addiction, depression and a huge number of social burdens.
What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)? |
I prefer mentors. I select and keep handy the names of persons I feel would make a difference in my life. I also read a lot! ositive motivational books carry weight that you might not want to deal with. Additionally, I make it to
every training session I can. Others in your shoes always show up there, and your problems pale in comparison to what they can tell you.
What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer? |
I believe one of the toughest questions all persons must be prepared for in an interview situation is: "Tell us of a conflict or challenge that you faced and how you resolved it." This, if prepared for in advance, is one of the most
valuable answers to an interviewer in that it reflects thought process, human interaction and problem resolution.
What other advice would you give people who want to do this work? |
Be passionate, have thick skin and have an open mind. You'll benefit from all three.
