Advice
What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field? |
Honestly, I need to do more reading myself, and am not too sure what to recommend. The ESRI website is a good start.
What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work? |
Not really sure I can answer that. It's not so black and white.
In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field? |
There are all sorts of places to go. I think environmental internships are the most rewarding, and some really intersting work. It can be difficult to arrange your life to make them work though...
What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field? |
This field itself is a major trend. People are staring to use GIS (geographic information systems) more and more and are begining to understand its powers and usefulness.
What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)? |
The staff here is great, and has been my best support.
What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer? |
Depending on the job we ask a lot of technical questions. Do you know how to do X function? What is the difference between X and Y items... that type of thing. You need to know what you're doing in order to answer them. They're not
questions that one can be 'coached' to answer.
What other advice would you give people who want to do this work? |
Think about the type of organization you are going to work for. This type of work can be very monotonous. Thinks aobut the type of work you will be doing, and how repetitive/unique projects will be.
