What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field?
The public Web site of United Way of America is the best source of information. The address is http://national.unitedway.org/index.cfm, which has links to United Ways across the country.

What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work?
What are your personal values and how do you see the match with the mission of United Way? How would you demonstrate that you are results- and perfomance-oriented? Do you work well as an individual contributor and equally as well in groups?

In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field?
Fundraising associates, community investment associates, research associates, marketing/communications associates, MIS and finance associates.

What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field?
One major trand is continued turnover and the need to focus attention on recruiting diverse talent for entry and mid-level postions. Two major issues continue to be competition for charitable dollars and focusing United Ways on demonstrating community impact achieved through contributions.

What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)?
Continous learning and growth through professional development, and the building of professional networks that provide support and advice.

What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer?
Give an example of a project that you have taken from vision to implementation. What were the major challenges? What outcomes did you acheive?

What other advice would you give people who want to do this work?
Have an informational meeting with a professional who is currently working with a United Way, to get a clear sense of what the various jobs entail.
