Advice
What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field?
Read the New York Times and the Washington Post. The most important thing in D.C. is to stay on top of current events. Other magizines, such as The Nation, often have relevant articles. You can use the Web to track legislation by using the Library of Congress site at http://thomas.loc.gov.

What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work?
Are you willing to live a low-budget lifestyle? I can't afford a car on my salary (public tranportation here is great anyway).
Will you be satisfied knowing that you're working for long-term goals, and not necessarily seeing immediate results?

In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field?
There are so many opportunities for recent grads in D.C. Every organization offers internships, many of which allow you to do actual issue work. You can also get a job in a Congressional office.

What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field?
Well, I work in arms control, which is a seemingly hopeless cause right now. The impact of September 11 is huge on all the issues I work on.

What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)?
Working with a supportive boss who encouraged me to attend as many functions as possible (seeing speakers, conferences, etc.). He also helped me make lots of contacts, which will be invaluable in future job searches.

What other advice would you give people who want to do this work?
Be prepared for frustration with our government. But also know that what you're doing does matter, and will make a difference one day. Also, take full advantage of living in a city with so many free opportunities. Go to receptions, speakers, etc. You'll never know who you'll meet, or what opportunities will arise.
