Career Path
What was your first job after college and how did you get it?
Temp work -- that was a drag -- then I got a part-time job leading workshops on healthy families for a domestic violence shelter where I volunteered.

How did you get your current job?
My last job included providing "technical assistance" -- basically consulting services -- to domestic violence programs statewide. That built a network through which I continue to provide those consulting services. In addition, I got my work in human rights -- which is a small part of my work but a part I love -- through my previous work in Colombia and other places, and through friendships developed there.

What experiences and/or course work in college best prepared you for this job or influenced your decision to do this work?
Loving international literature and loving to travel went hand in hand. That expanded my mind, heart, and political understanding of the world. Practical classes I took include program planning, evaluation and grant writing, which has been helpful too.

Any regrets? What experiences and/or course work might have better prepared you for this work?
I was a big dabbler in school, crossing departments a lot, changing jobs and extracurriculars -- I wish I had stuck with a couple of things and taken on more responsibilities. That's how I have grown since college, by jumping in and taking on responsibilities.

Have you attended graduate school or are you considering graduate school? What degree do you have/would you want and why? Are there any limitations to advancement in your field if you do not have a certain graduate degree?
I got a Masters in Public Health from U.C. Berkeley in 1998, with a focus on community health education. What I learned there and the contacts I made have been helpful.
